Bye Bye Grouchy Pills

Today is Avery's first day off of his grouchy pills AKA steroids.  Maybe we will see a change in his attitude soon.  Lets keep our fingers crossed.  His spinal procedure went good this morning although he is a little sore in his back.  I was able to sneak out and get him some noodles while he was sedated so he was pretty happy when he got back to the room.  And I was pretty stoked too since I was able to get a good cup of JOE for a change!!  We won't have the results from the bone marrow aspiration until early next week hopefully but we are pretty confident all the Leukemia cells will be gone.  This doesn't mean everything will be over of course but it does mean we are on the right track to a full recovery.

Hump Day

Hello everyone!
Today was much better than yesterday.  He did have to get more labs this morning but the lady who did them was much nicer.  Just one stick in the foot and that was all.  None tomorrow though, thank goodness! We made it down to the cafeteria today and we had a romantic lunch together :) we also went to The Zone and he decorated some cookies and got an Iron Man Holloween costume.

Tomorrow he is getting a bone marrow aspiration and a lumbar punture, I will let you all know how it goes.  Thanks again everyone for your prayers! We love you all <3

New IV

So today was a BAD day!!!  It all started at about 7 this morning, the IV team (supposed to be the experts) comes in to draw blood and tell me they are going to go ahead and put in a new IV since the other was getting bad.  Well 15 minutes and a very distraught and sweaty child later they've got their blood but he has no IV.  They couldn't find a good vein.  They poked him twice and couldn't get a good vein.  They let us know they would be back in about noon to "try" again since he had antibiotics coming at 2.  1:30 comes
around and here they come with there horrid needles and bad judgment once again.  2 more pokes and again 15 minutes or so later they get a vein.  My poor little Avery passed out after all the commotion.  The rest of the day was alright he got a brand new Woody toy for all the trouble, which he liked very much.  He also got the rest of his beads of courage that he was owed for the past two and a half weeks.  Twenty something beads in just over two weeks (he's been through a lot) and he needs a new string before he can get anymore.

He has had 3 blood cultures and they have all been negative for infection but they will continue to watch them over the next couple of days to make sure they don't grow anything.  Planning that all goes well we will be coming home Monday.

We also had a little mishap tonight.  When his evening nurse came in to administer his antibiotics we ran into a problem... the machine was saying the IV was blocked.  Well it was flushing, there were no kinks, and everything looked fine.  So she called in for a second opinion.  That second opinion ended up with 4 other nurses in here holding him down to change the dressing because they felt that it was too tight causing the problem.  Once that was done everyone left and she then tried to start the antibiotics again... same thing, it was saying that there was a blockage.  Come to find out, there is this little clamp on the line just down from the pump.... YEP!!! It was locked!  All of that for nothing.  WOW what a day.

Avery Wear

Hey wanted to let everyone know the wrist bands came in and the shirts should be here any day now. call Heather if you want one.  229) 221-8206

Fun Times

Today at the hospital they had two miniature horses so the kids could pet and brush them. Avery was not fond of them but laughed when his mommy made the horse wiggle its nose. After that he got some movies from the library and went back to the room to watch them. He got his belly full and the movie watched him. Poor kid must of been tried because he is still asleep.

Good News

Well there some good news. The doctors told us the leukemia cells have something called triple trisomy which means they have extra chromosomes. In past cases patients that had triple trisomy had a 92% chance of getting better. Praise the Lord

MRI

Avery had an MRI today and the test showed that the infection was in his muscle and no abscess has formed. However, they were not sure if it was in the bone because the luekemia makes the bone look abnormal. Therefore, they have to do another MRI to distinguish if it is infection or leukemia.

Second Infection

These last few days have been crazy. We were in the hospital because of a stahp infection. This infection is worst than the last time becuase it is in his bloodstream. When the antibiotics were administerd and started to kill the stahp. the stahp released toxins into his bloodstream and put his body into spetic shock. As his heart rate rises to compensate for his blood pressure it like Avery life  was being drawn from him. All the health care providers could do is watch and see if the fliuds and meds would work. After 2 houres in trauma he started stabilizing and we could all breath easy. We were put in ICU so he could be watched more closely. We stayed ther for two days and  on  we are the AFLAC floor (which is like the hilton part of the hospital). Thanks everybody for your prayers and support times like this would be unbearable.

The Beginning

On September 18, 2010, Avery was just an average little boy celebrating his 3rd birthday with a bounce house, bounce slide, cake and ice cream. We had a great time, however, a few days later things went south. He began running a fever of 103F we took him to the doctor. Well an abrasion on his left elbow threw up red flags and concerned the doctors enough to admit him into the hospital to start IV antibiotics. In the hospital blood work was done 3 times all coming back abnormal. Now here we are battling Leukemia... but all is well... BECAUSE WE HAVE AN AWESOME GOD!!! Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia is the most common of childhood Leukemia with a success rate of 80-90%. Prayer, Prayer, Prayer :)
Heather Barnes has set up a Benefit Account at SunTrust Bank if donations would like to be made. Also, there are many fundraisers which are organized by Heather, if you would like to participate in any way or have any ideas you can contact her @               (229) 221-8206         (229) 221-8206.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts and prayers. Avery's birthday is September 14th he just turned 3 years old, he is in love with anything robots and superheros... his favorites are Iron Man and Bubblebee (from Transformers). Avery also really enjoys being outside and has recently taken up basketball.
